Presenter: Joel Bunn, Director of the IPM Program for Colonial Willamsburg

Abstract:

When over a million visitors a year wander down your garden paths to travel back in time, it takes a unique approach to maintain the health of your landscape without harming the public or environment. Learn how Colonial Williamsburg has applied an IPM program to its historical landscapes, and hear the trials and tribulations, as well as the successes of making it work "behind the scenes". After all, we don't want to spoil the magic now do we?

Biography:

Joel Bunn has spent five years directing the IPM program for Colonial Williamsburg, the living history museum located in Williamsburg, Virginia. As the Supervisor of IPM and Arboriculture, Joel has provided pest management services and training throughout the Foundation's town, museum, hotel, and green space properties. He also coordinated the Pesticide applicator program in the Landscape department, from which 50 employees now possess licensed pesticide applicator status in the state of Virginia. Joel is a recognized speaker throughout Virginia on issues related to Pesticide recertification and Integrated Pest Management. He received a B.S. and M.A. in Biology from the College of William and Mary in Virginia, and has conducted research and fieldwork for the University of Maryland, the USDA, and The Virginia Department of Forestry in plant pathology and entomology. In January, Joel joined Virginia Cooperative Extension as a 4-H agent in York County, Virginia.
