New Alphabet Soup: AFRI Supersedes NRI

USDA’s Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service recently launched the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI). AFRI, which supersedes the National Research Initiative (NRI), will have six priority areas:

  • Plant health and production and plant products;
  • Animal health and production and animal products;
  • Food safety, nutrition and health;
  • Renewable energy, natural resources and environment;
  • Agriculture systems and technology; and
  • Agriculture economics and rural communities.

CSREES has released a detailed program announcement and anticipates that AFRI’s Request for Applications will be released early in 2009.
